Startup Quest (CareerSource Broward)
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
The opening at Startup Quest came along just as I was winding down the FI course for founders in Tampa. Startup Quest was the recipient of a $12M grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It was designed for unemployed professionals with college degrees to explore entrepreneurship as a career option. It was founded at the University of Florida and administered by the workforce development boards around the state (now called CareerSource). The participants competed in teams to write business plans for technologies invented at one of Florida’s universities or federal labs (NASA).
The Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 programs that I managed attracted 750 applicants and graduated 29 teams comprising 215 participants. My role was to recruit the mentors (40), speakers (15), judges (15), board of advisors (12), sponsors (20), and community partners (30).
